Gombe State Governor, Alhaji Inuwa Yahaya has convened the state security council meeting to tackle the reported cases of herders- farmers conflicts in some parts of the state on Tuesday.

The meeting presided over by the Governor was attended by the state Commissioner of Police, Commander, 301 Artillery Brigade, Director State Security Service, State Controllers of the Nigeria Custom, Immigration and Correctional Services as well as Commandants, Nigeria Security, and Civil Defence and Federal Road Safety Corps'.

Also in attendance were the Deputy Governor, Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff, Attorney-General, Commissioner of Internal Security and Ethical Orientation as well as Special Advisers on Security Matters. Gombe state Commissioner of Police, Bello Makwashi, has said measures put in place to quell the recent herders and farmers clash at border communities in Gombe will not be confrontational.

Makwashi stated this on Tuesday evening, while briefing journalists at the end of the state security meeting.

He said what is required is the involvement of the traditional rulers, security agencies and stakeholders in resolving the current challenges.

The commissioner of police also reiterated the importance of understanding noting that it is a state issue as it was the responsibility of Gombe state to ensure they (herders) pass without much friction with farmers. He said, " it is not going to be confrontational. We have decided to go on community-based strategies all stakeholders will be together. The ministry in charge of internal security, the police, and all security agencies, leaders of Fulani and traditional rulers. The places are local governments having boundaries with our state. The cattle herders were migrating, thereby destroying crops". Makwashi added that no lives were involved from the clash "although no lives were involved we want to see how possible we can manage it. The keyword is they should not be confrontational, instead, they should understand themselves".

Recall that governor Inuwa Yahaya, on Saturday at the convocation of Federal College of Horticulture highlighted the regrettable clash between Herders and Farmers as he promised the state drive in accepting the federal government Livestock Transformation Programme to end further damages.
