Head injury: Akpoguma to undergo scan

TSG Hoffenheim defender, Kevin Akpoguma, will undergo a scan after suffering a head injury last Friday, while on international duty with the Super Eagles, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Akpoguma limped off in the second half of the Eagles’ 1-0 loss to Guinea-Bissau at the Moshood Abiola National stadium in Abuja, after he was kicked in the head during an aerial duel.

He sustained a cut and had his head bandaged, before coming off in the 55th minute, but the injury ruled him out of the reverse fixture in Bissau on Monday, which the Eagles won 1-0.

The Nigerian defender is doubtful for Hoffenheim’s Bundesliga fixture against Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Speaking ahead of the clash with Bremen, Hoffenheim coach, Pellegrino Matarazzo, said it was too early to say how severe the injury was.

“He suffered a nasty knock on his head,” Matarazzo said.

“We will see tomorrow (today) with the results of the MRI scan. We will see tomorrow if it is badly damaged.”

The 27-year-old’s injury is the latest setback in a difficult season for Hoffenheim, who sit 15th in the Bundesliga with 22 points from 25 games, one ahead of the relegation playoffs spot.

Voted second behind Angelo Stiller for Hoffenheim’s Player of The Month for March after recording 31 per cent of the votes, Akpoguma has made 23 appearances this season and has been cautioned eight times this season.
