Nigerian investigative journalist David Hundeyin has written a heartfelt message to Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
Hundeyin described Anas as his mentor who gave him a second chance in life after the last two years, which he says were the "lowest" in his personal and professional life.
Recall that Anas was instrumental in the journalist securing asylum in Ghana after his claims that Nigeria's security agencies had an arrest warrant for him.
Hundeyin appealed to Nana Akufo-Addo, the Ghanaian President, and members of the Ghana security services to resist covert pressure from Nigerian security agencies to revoke his refugee status and repatriate him to Nigeria.
Hundeyin’s appeal comes in the wake of his investigative articles scrutinizing President Bola Tinubu’s alleged drug-related history and questionable academic qualifications, particularly his Chicago State University degree. Hundeyin alleges that ever since these exposés, he has faced relentless harassment.
Hundeyin was one of the key figures who drove the online presence of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party.
In his message, he expressed deep gratitude for Anas’ unwavering support and guidance. He emphasized that Anas' birthday is not just a celebration but a moment of reflection for him.
"Two years ago, at one of the lowest personal and professional points I have ever experienced, an angel flew in and gave me a second lease on life. His name is @anasglobal, and he is a key reason why I am still alive and drawing breath on this earth today," he said in the post on X.
"I don't have many friends and people that I have ever entrusted my life to, but this man is right up there at the top of my list. He's a true gentleman, a protector of the afflicted and someone to whom I am indebted in ways that are not possible to repay."
"Whenever it's his birthday, it's not just a celebration, but a moment of reflection for me. This is the man who represented everything I ever wanted to be when I started out as a journalist a little over a decade ago. The fact that I actually got to emulate him, then meet him, then even live in his house under his protection is one of my biggest flexes as a human being, and I will absolutely bore my grandkids to tears someday with stories about my time around him," he added.
"Awoda pa, nkwa tenten ne anigye ma w’abusua me bossu," he wrote in Ghana's Twi language to mean "Happy birthday, long life, and happiness for your family, my boss."
