Hadiza Oboh: How Nigeria's first female pilot was brutally murdered by domestic staff

Hadiza Oboh Hadiza Oboh

The first female pilot for Nigeria Airways was Hadiza Oboh. She was successful, prosperous and well-respected. She was known for her glamorous lifestyle and lived alone in a beautiful home in Ikoyi, Lagos.

On Feb. 8, 1998, she came home from a flight. As on other visits, her security guards opened the gate, and she entered. They brought her bags back to her room as she freshened up. Afterwards, she retreated to the kitchen to make a meal. But she never got to eat the food.

Unbeknownst to her, her security guard had plotted a terrible betrayal. He had let a few co-conspirators into the house. They entered through the back door while Hadiza had gone to the kitchen and strangled her with a rope.

It was straightforward enough — take her cash, her gold, expensive gadgets, and whatever else of value from the house. Having access to her bedroom, they knew where she kept her valuables.

They murdered her and then dumped her body into a septic tank in the compound. In an effort to cover up the crime, they cemented the tank with plaster, sealing it completely.

Their greediness did not stop there. They looted her entire house, taking everything they could lay their hands on. They even started using her car as a taxi to earn more money.

Miraculously, they did not run away. Whenever visitors came looking for Hadiza, they would simply say, "Madam has traveled." Since she was a pilot, people took them at their word, and no one had any suspicions.

However, a high-ranking officer who lived in the area felt that something was not right. He took it upon himself to make some enquiries. On questioning the domestic staff, he found the horrifying truth. Hadiza's body was found in the septic tank. The killers were apprehended and brought into court.

But the Nigerian justice system failed her. The suspects were let out on bail. They provided fake names and fake addresses, just like their sureties. Once they were let out on bail, they disappeared.

This was in 1998. It is 2025 now.

To date, there is no justice for Nigeria Airways' first female pilot, Hadiza Oboh.
