The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has demanded the arrest and prosecution of the former Personal Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on New Media. He is accused of making derogatory and contemptuous remarks about the Federal High Court and claiming he can influence court decisions at will.
In a statement issued Sunday in Abuja, Zainab Yusuf, the National Media Affairs Director, explained that the former aide's assertion implies he believes he has the power to manipulate the judiciary and can draft and sway court rulings from various offices within the Presidential villa.
HURIWA also recalled that Bashir Ahmad, upon realising the outrage from other Twitter users about his claim to have influence over court decisions, deleted his tweet.
“We consider this subtle admission of the near-infinite capacity of the former Presidential aide to predetermine the decision of the competent courts of law as a grave threat to constitutional democracy and has rubbished the sanctity of the nation’s court system," HURIWA said.
