Gunmen kill Bauchi poly senior staff, one other

Gunmen in the early hours of Saturday attacked Birshin Fulani community on the outskirts of the Bauchi metropolis, along Bauchi-Dass road and killed two people, including senior staff of the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, Abubakar Muhammad.

The gunmen, whose number could not be ascertained, stormed the area at about 2.30 am and started shooting sporadically, causing pandemonium.

Muhammad was killed in the attack.

The Federal Polytechnic announced the murder of its staff on its official Facebook page, saying the deceased was a chief engineer in the Directorate of Physical Planning of the institution.

The post read, “Unknown gunmen killed one of our staff members, Chief Engineer Abubakar Garba Muhammad (Babangida Birshi) of Directorate of Physical Planning around 2:30 am at his resident in Burshin Fulani.”

A funeral prayer was held on Saturday morning for the deceased in Birshin Fulani Mosque, behind his house. His remains were later taken to the Muslim burial ground where they were buried.

The Public Relations Unit of the polytechnic also confirmed the incident, describing it as “most unfortunate” and assuring that everything would be done to arrest the fleeing gunmen.

A source told our correspondent that the gunmen also stole two motorcycles which they used in the operation.

He added, “The gunmen were heard shouting and shooting sporadically as they stormed the Burshin Fulani village where the late chief engineer was shot directly in the neck leading to his death.

“While trying to escape, the gunmen shot another person identified as an engineer working with a Bauchi-based indigenous construction company.”

The Bauchi State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, confirmed the incident.
