Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has stated that fellow cleric Sheikh Jingir is right to call Nigeria a Muslim country.

During a presentation to dignitaries consisting of northern political think-tanks, Jingir called Nigeria a Muslim country and asked for support for the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

This generated backlash from Christians and other Nigerians who disputed the claim because Nigeria is a secular country.

However, Sheikh Gumi, in a post on Facebook, stated that Jingir ought to be excused because presidential candidate Peter Obi also weaponises religion in his campaigns.

To buttress his point, Gumi shared a 2022 video of Obi saying, "Please, Church wake up and take back your country, God bless you."

He captioned the video, "Sheikh Jingir should be excused for his extreme view in politics; he dwells in the eye of the storm of excessive bigotry against Islam. Just recently, a mere Muslim VC in Plateau State is stirring controversy. On the other hand, the opposition is not also free from using religion to garner votes. In a multi-religious entity, religion should not be dragged into the quagmire of dirty politics."
