The Lagos State Branch of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice has commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his administration’s significant investment in security infrastructure and commitment to peacebuilding in the state.

In a statement jointly signed by its General Secretary, Dr. Hassan Sulaimon, and Chairman, Richard Emmanuel, issued at the Lagos State University’s School of Communications, Ojo, the society highlighted the governor’s tangible contributions to strengthening law enforcement and enhancing public safety.

“In the last one year, the Lagos State Government under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has provided over 260 vehicles and other security equipment such as bulletproof vests, body-worn cameras, and helmets to support the Nigerian Police Force,” the statement read.

The SPSP also acknowledged the recruitment of 1,000 officers into the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps as a proactive measure to bolster security intelligence, particularly in high-risk areas like Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Lekki.

“The governor’s consistent support for security operatives and restructuring of the criminal justice system through the Lagos Criminal Information System are clear indicators of a government prioritising peace and stability,” the group noted.

In January, the Special Adviser to the governor on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, said the security architecture in Lagos made it possible for the state not to record any major security breach during the last festive season.

Akosile said that despite the influx of people into Lagos during the last Christmas and New Year celebrations, it was possible for Lagos to secure its environment due to the priority placed on security.

On the domestic front, the Society applauded the state government’s zero-tolerance stance on sexual and gender-based violence, noting that it has led to “over 140 convictions and six restraining orders” within the past year. According to the SPSP, despite the alarming 8,692 cases of domestic and sexual abuse reported, victims received free medical care, shelter, counselling, and legal support.

The SPSP’s recognition of Governor Sanwo-Olu comes as part of activities marking this year’s World Peace Day. They urged the Sanwo-Olu administration to sustain its efforts.
