Afrobeats artist Omah Lay has said he initially believed that fellow singer Davido didn’t think highly of him.
However, this misconception was soon overturned, opening the door for their Grammy-nominated collaboration “With You."
He shared that after seeing a clip of Davido responding positively to his music, his perception shifted.
Omah Lay revealed this during a GRAMMY red carpet interview with OkayAfrica, which was shared by HYPETRIBE on Monday, stating that their connection was instant and ultimately led to their musical partnership.
“I was in the house, really, and I was going through it when I saw it, and I lost my mind.
“It was the fact that I didn’t know Davido was like that. I thought we had a beef. I thought he didn’t like me.
“It was funny, and we connected so well after that. Boom—magic happened,” he said.
Omah Lay characterised their collaboration as natural and seamless. While feeling hopeful about his chances at the Grammys, he also recognised the strong Nigerian representation in the Best African Music Performance category.
When asked who he thought might take the award, he responded, "Me and Davido, of course," but added, "Burna is there, Ayra is there, Wizkid is there. Any of us—I mean, we are repping Nigeria."
Despite the nomination alongside other prominent Nigerian artists, the award ultimately went to South Africa’s Tyla for “Push 2 Start”.
