Governors to hold emergency meeting to avert planned strike by organised labour

Nigerian governors have called for an emergency meeting to intervene in the crisis between the FG and the NLC

The NLC had threatened that it would embark on a nationwide strike if the FG refuses to reduce the prices of petrol and electricity

The virtual meeting of the state governors is scheduled to hold on Friday, September 25

Nigerian state governors have taken a step towards averting the impending industrial action planned by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The NLC had said it would embark on strike if the federal government refuses to rescind its decision to hike oil and electricity prices in the country.

In a proactive bid to avert the looming strike which may further cripple the economy that is grappling with the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) said it would hold an emergency meeting.

Channels TV reported that the aim of the meeting is to seek ways of settling the rift between the Nigerian government and the NLC, as well as to find a mutually agreed soft landing on amicable grounds.

Legit.ng gathers that this was disclosed in a communique on Wednesday, September 23, by Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo, spokesman for the NGF's secretariat.

The meeting which is the first NGF emergency virtual teleconference will start at 6pm on Friday, September 25.

Meanwhile, the federal government has scheduled a meeting with members of the organised labour for Thursday, September 24, in order to avert the planned strike by the unions.

The meeting would have in attendance leaders of the NLC and those of the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Labour, Charles Akpan, said the labour unions will be hosted by the minister of labour, Chris Ngige around 3pm on Thursday, September 24, at a hall in the presidential villa.
