Global coronavirus deaths surpass three million

Over three million people in the world have been confirmed dead from coronavirus complications.

According to Worldometers, a global statistics platform, the total number of deaths currently stands at 3,015,001.

The platform’s record, which is updated by the minute, places the total number of recoveries at 119,432,902 out of the 140,598,859 cases recorded worldwide.

The United States tops the list of worst-hit countries with over 32.3 million infections, out of which 579,942 persons have died.

India, Brazil, France, and Russia follow suit with 14.5 million, 13.8 million, 5.2 million, and 4.7 million cases respectively.

In Africa, the total number of infections stands at 4,446,558 with 117,680 deaths.

South Africa which tops the list has 1,564,355 cases, which is about 35.2 percent of the total number of cases in Africa.

Nigeria ranks seventh in the continent with 164,147 total cases and 2,061 deaths.

However, there has been a drastic decline in the number of infections recorded in the country.

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), 67 new cases were recorded from eight states on April 16 — but no fatality has been recorded for five consecutive days.

About one million Nigerians have received the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine since it arrived in the country early in March.

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) says 8,439 persons across the country reported mild side effects after they received the vaccine.
