Nigeria's women's basketball team, DTigress, have defended their AfroBasket Championship title with a 78-64 victory over Mali in Ivory Coast.
DTigress won their fifth consecutive crown, becoming the first African basketball team to achieve this feat, and they did so in remarkable style.
The team lost the first quarter by five points (21-26) and fought back in the other three quarters, winning 20-15, 20-15 and 17-8 in Q3, Q3 and Q4.
Ezzine Kalu was the star of the night, scoring a match-high 20 points, while Amy Okonkwo scored 19 points to claim a big victory for the team.
According to FIBA, DTigress have now won 29 consecutive matches in the competition, with their last loss coming in 2015.
As noted by Punch, it's the second championship for coach Rena Wakama after leading the team to the 2023 tournament and a strong outing at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The legendary Sarah Ogoke bounced back from giving birth in November 2024 to be part of the team and be the only star in the five consecutive wins.
Amy Okonkwo made it consecutive wins after she was named the most valuable player at the tournament, an award she also won at the 2023 tournament.
Nigerians react to DTigress' win
Nigerians have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to award the DTigress players and crew their $100,000 for the remarkable victory.
The Presidency set the precedent after doling out a massive compensation to the Super Falcons after winning their 10th WAFCON title.
