Nollywood actor Gideon Okeke takes centre stage in The Missing Chord, a new music-driven romantic drama that unites creative talent from the United Kingdom, Nigeria and Ghana.
Written, produced and directed by award-winning UK-based Ghanaian filmmaker Bibi Shadbolt, and co-produced by Olumuyiwa Ojo, the 19-minute short film is a BOS Films UK production that celebrates African storytelling through an international creative collaboration.
Okeke plays Emeka, a talented but struggling Nigerian musician whose dreams of success have been repeatedly shattered by rejection. As he begins to question his talent and self-worth, Emeka embarks on a journey from Nigeria to Ghana – where an unexpected encounter begins to change the course of his life.
Blending romance, drama, humour and music, the film explores themes of identity, artistic ambition, resilience and the courage to believe in oneself.
The production also features music by celebrated African artists, alongside original compositions created specifically for the film, bringing an authentic African musical flavour to the storytelling.
For director Bibi Shadbolt, whose previous feature film Afua’s Diary received international festival recognition, The Missing Chord represents another step in her commitment to telling African stories with universal appeal.
Speaking on the film and his decision to cast Okeke, Shadbolt said:
“I wanted an actor who could bring both strength and vulnerability to Emeka’s character, and Gideon has that ability. The Missing Chord_is more than a story about music or romance. It’s about those moments in life when rejection makes us question our worth, and how sometimes it takes one person believing in us to help us rediscover the confidence we’ve lost.
“As a Ghanaian filmmaker based in the UK, I’m passionate about telling African stories that connect with audiences across cultures. Working with talent from Nigeria, Ghana and the UK has been a wonderful opportunity to bring that vision to life. I hope audiences will see a little of themselves in Emeka’s journey and leave with the message that their worth is not defined by someone else’s approval.”
The short film also serves as a proof of concept for the planned feature film, There’s Love in the Lyrics, a larger African musical romance currently being developed by BOS Films UK.
Bringing together Nigerian acting talent, Ghanaian storytelling influences and British filmmaking expertise, the production reflects the growing opportunities for creative collaboration between African filmmakers and the diaspora.
