GTB boycott might affect family, friends who work there, says Lere Olayinka

Lere Olayinka, an aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned against the campaign to boycott Guaranteed Trust Bank (GTB).

This was after a human rights activist, Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, was arrested and detained in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to VeryDarkMan's lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, the activist was locked inside the exit door of a GTB establishment to enable the EFCC to arrest him.

He shared on X, "VDM DETAINED AT EFCC: Our lawyers led by the Head of our firm @Marvin_Omorogbe just met VDM’s friend who was arrested together with him in EFCC custody. VDM refused to come out of the cell; that he won’t see anyone. VDM was locked inside the GTB exit door for over 5 mins to enable EFCC arrest him and his friend. We will be taking legal actions against GTB for the inhumane treatment meted out to our client. We will issue a public statement soon."
Since the arrest, many have been calling for a boycott of GTB.

VeryDarkMan's lawyer has also vowed to close his accounts with the bank in protest against the arrest.

Reacting, Olayinka wondered what will happened to the staff of GTB, some of whom are family and friends of those threatening to boycott the bank.

He shared on X, "If you pull down Guaranty Trust Bank, because one person was arrested in the bank, what will happen to those working and earning their living there?

"Some of them self, their family members and friends are staff of GTB o. Sense far from some people walahi. Boycott ko, Girlcott ni.

"I have been using @gtbank for close to 20 years. I heard one Online Baseless Lawyer and Human Rice and Beans Hacktivist is calling for boycott of GTB. Boycott ko, Girlcott ni."
