Fuel consumption in Nigeria soars to 63.7 million liters per day

The total consumption of premium motor spirit in Nigeria rose to 63.7 million liters per day in December 2025, up from 52.9 ml/d in November.

This is according to the latest fact sheet released by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA.

The data showed that fuel consumption rose sharply by 10.8 million liters/day, or 20.4 percent, month-to-month.

Out of 63.7 million liters of 74.2 ml/d total domestic supply of petrol in December, up from 71.5 ml/d the previous month.

NMDPRA data further indicated that fuel supply to the domestic market from Dangote Refinery rose to 32.01 million liters per day in December, up from 19.47 ml/d.

This means that domestic supply from the Dangote Refinery to the market rose by 64.4 percent on a month-to-month basis; however, the refinery failed to meet up with its planned 50 million liters per day domestic supply target in the period under review.

Recall that on December 11, 2025, Dangote Refinery reduced its petrol price to N699 and subsequently pushed the retail price to N739 per liter at MRS filling stations nationwide.

Recently the Managing Director of Dangote Refinery, David Bird, insisted that Dangote petrol at N739 is competitive.

However, professor emeritus of petroleum economics and energy expert, Wumi Iledare, has described Dangote’s N739 per liter petrol price as a market distortion.
