The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, has called on President Bola Tinubu to free Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

In a statement shared by the President of the CBCN, Most Reverend Lucius Ugorji, during the episcopal ordination of the Auxiliary Bishop of Orlu Diocese in Imo State on Wednesday, the group believe it will be in the best interest of the South-East if the proscribed leader is released.

The call comes after the Federal High Court in Abuja denied Kanu’s bail application.

According to Ugorji, Kanu’s release will pave the way for economic prosperity and security in the South East. He added that Kanu’s detention has been a major cause of insecurity in the South East.

He mentioned that the Monday sit-at-home has collapsed the economy, causing many businesses to lose billions of naira.

Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, following his arrest in June 2021.
