Found After 72 Hours: Former Senator Bello Mandiya dies after tragic bathroom slip in Abuja residence

Details have emerged regarding the tragic passing of former Katsina South Senator Bello Mandiya, whose body was discovered inside his Abuja residence three days after he reportedly slipped and suffered a fatal head injury in his bathroom.

Relaying the harrowing sequence of events on the floor of the Senate during a plenary session, Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central) revealed that the former lawmaker was living alone at the time of the incident.

According to Ningi, Mandiya was last seen by a colleague at approximately 11:00 AM on Friday, September 4, 2026, before returning home to prepare for Juma'at prayers.

"He brought out his cap, his phones, and put them on the bed, and went into the bathroom to take his bath," Senator Ningi recounted to his colleagues. "After taking his bath, when he was out of the bathroom, then he slipped and knocked his head in the bathroom."

Ningi disclosed that Mandiya remained undiscovered for 72 hours. Concerns were raised on Monday, September 7, when a foul odor began emanating from the apartment and the local Chief Imam of Apo noted the former senator's unusual absence from prayers across three consecutive days.

Neighbors and residents subsequently broke down the door to his apartment, where his lifeless body was discovered in the bathroom.

"For 72 hours, Mr President, nobody knew where Bello Mandiya was," Ningi told the Senate. "There is nothing permanent about anything. Nothing permanent about our position, nothing permanent about our wealth."

Senator Bello Mandiya represented the Katsina South Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) between 2019 and 2023. During his tenure in the 9th Senate, he served as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Water Resources.

Prior to his election to the National Assembly, he served as the Chief of Staff to former Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari.
