Football: Afe Babalola, Lateef Fagbemi others jostle for semis ticket

Aare Afe Babalola boys will be displaying gallantry as they fight for semi final ticket with determined players of Law Pavillion tomorrow (Friday) in a quarter final match in the ongoing Aare Babalola/ Ibadan Bar league.

The kick off time for the quarterfinal match of the five-aside football tournament is 4pm at the Olubadan Sports stadium.

Other quarterfinal matches are Adebayo Gbadamosi vs Lasun Sanusi, Agbaje Agbaje vs Makanjuola Esan, and Lateef Fagbemi vs Crown Solicitors (best loser at the group stage).

A statement by the organisers, a copy made available to journalists in Ibadan today hinted that despite the failure of Aiku & Co. to participate in the competition, the match fixtures will not be uttered .

The statement reads, “Further to the conclusion of the group stage games and the failure of Aiku & Co. to participate at all, the best loser at the group stage has been selected to play in the quarter finals in their place.

"Ibrahim Kareem Ojo, the coach and team Manager, Adebayo & Gbadamosi football team expressed optimism that his team are winning tomorrow’s game against Lasun having praised his players for the good result from the two games the team had played.

"It was a great game, the players were well motivated. From the last game, they saw some lapses, and the players were able to correct it. Today, you could see that it was a better game from the last game,” he said.

Speaking on the progress of the football competition solely sponsored by the Afe Babalola & Co in honour of the living legend, Aare Afe Babalola, Chairman, Ibadan Branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Folashade Alade said the competition which is one of the features of the Annual Law week has contributed greatly to uplifting the status of the Ibadan Bar.

She said “the competition has given the much needed  exposure, training of our boys for football competition nationally, comradeship, you will see that the players were from different law firms, so it brings friendship, comradeship. Well, in terms of prize, its not much but the fun, the excitement, we always look forward to it every year.”

The NBA Chairman further extolled the virtues of the Patron, Ibadan NBA Branch, Aare Afe Babalola for his foresight, ingenuity and love for humanity.

"Our revered patron, Aare Afe Babalola is our father who cares for us till now, even right now Baba knows everything going on right here notwithstanding that he is not in Ibadan presently, because he is our patron, everything going on right here we usually inform him and he is always there supporting us just as you have seen this football competition, he is the only one who has been the mastermind supporting this competition over these years. So baba is a lover of football, lover of human beings, lover of humanity and always hoping that we all as younger people will grow and exceed him,” she stated.
