Rivers United head coach Finidi George has called on the club’s supporters to rally behind the team as they prepare for their first home match of the season against Kwara United on Sunday at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Pride of Rivers were held to a 1-1 draw by Remo Stars on the opening weekend, leaving them in search of a first win of the new Nigeria Premier Football League campaign. Finidi believes playing at home offers his side a crucial edge but insists the backing of the stands could prove decisive.

“We know how difficult a game like this can be, but playing at home gives us that edge,” the former Nigeria international said.

He explained that he is eager to see the stadium filled but accepts that whatever turnout they get, the team must focus on delivering.

“I am still looking forward to when the stadium will be filled up. Whatever fans we get on Sunday, we will accept it, but on our part, we must do our job to get the maximum three points.”

Rivers United have a strong record against Kwara United, losing just twice in their last 13 league meetings. Last season, they came from behind to win this fixture 2-1 thanks to quickfire goals from Timothy Zachariah and David Benjamin, after Akeem Akanni had given the visitors an early lead.

Finidi, however, remains cautious and drew a parallel with last season’s slow start. He said his players had recovered well from their opening draw and were focused on setting the tone this weekend.

“It looks like a repetition of last season when we drew the first game and then came back to win the second. We hope we will be lucky enough to win on Sunday, take those three points and then feel comfortable in the dressing room.”

The coach will be without captain Temple Emekayi, who begins a three-match suspension after being sent off against Remo Stars. Kwara United, meanwhile, arrive in Port Harcourt as reigning Federation Cup champions and will look to build on that success under Tunde Sanni.

With the weight of expectation on his shoulders and history on Rivers United’s side, Finidi made clear where his focus lies. “We just have to make sure we do everything possible to get the result,” he said.
