Fenerbahce identify Bassey as prime target

Fenerbahce presidential candidate Aziz Yildirim has identified Fulham’s Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey as the club’s number one defensive transfer target ahead of the summer window, with Premier League-based players forming the core of their recruitment focus.

According to reports from Turkey (@Fenerbook1 on X), Yildirim and his scouting team regard Bassey as the preferred option for the left centre-back role, with Senegalese full-back Malick Diouf also being considered for the left-back position and Manchester City winger Savinho among the ambitious attacking names on the shortlist.

Bassey joined Fulham from Ajax in the summer of 2023 and has since made a century of appearances for the Cottagers, scoring four goals.

Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, the 26-year-old came through the academy ranks at Leicester City before making his breakthrough at Rangers, where he won the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup. His performances for the Super Eagles have also drawn praise, with Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen previously naming him among Africa’s standout defenders.

Securing his signature, however, is unlikely to be straightforward. Bassey remains under contract with Fulham until 2027, with the club also holding an option to extend the deal by a further year — a position that gives the Cottagers considerable leverage in any negotiations, particularly with Bassey regarded as a key figure in the squad.

Yildirim, who served as Fenerbahce president for two decades from February 1998 to June 2018, has actively re-entered the presidential race and has promised to bring in major Premier League talent if voted back into office.
