On Monday, May 20, 2024, the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a new bail application from Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is currently detained.
Presiding over the case, Justice Binta Nyako rejected Kanu's plea for the reinstatement of his previously revoked bail and his request to be transferred from the Department of State Services (DSS) custody to house arrest or prison custody.
The judge declared the application without merit, citing Kanu's previous bail violation and subsequent flight from the country as the basis for her decision.
Justice Nyako noted that the sureties who had initially stood for Kanu's bail sought to be relieved of their obligations, stating they were unable to locate him or ascertain his whereabouts.
The court's ruling left Kanu with the sole option of appealing to the Court of Appeal.
Justice Nyako also addressed discrepancies between the claims of Kanu's lead counsel regarding the Supreme Court's stance on the revocation of the earlier bail and her own findings, asserting that she did not find such claims substantiated in the Supreme Court judgment.
