Fear of persecution made lawmakers avoid my event - Senator Natasha

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central stated that concerns over political persecution kept many of her colleagues from openly supporting her during her suspension from the Senate.

She made this statement on Sunday in Okene, Kogi state, at the opening of a new market.

Akpoti-Uduaghan mentioned that while many senators privately showed their support, they refrained from public association because they feared political repercussions.

She also described her suspension as unlawful, highlighting that it revealed how fear and political intimidation influence behaviour within government bodies.

“When a government official faces challenges, isolation comes naturally,” she said.

“Even when people are sympathetic, they are afraid to associate with you openly for fear of being castigated or persecuted.

“Many senators stood by me quietly — they called, they visited — but in public, they couldn’t show it. I’m not offended by that.”
