Former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has insisted that Liam Delap was not the signing the Blues wanted following their victory over Los Angeles FC in the FIFA Club World Cup.
Chelsea began their campaign with a comfortable 2-0 victory over the MLS side at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, courtesy of goals from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez.
The Blues' new signing, Liam Delap, came off the bench in the second half to assist Enzo Fernandez for Chelsea's second goal.
Despite providing an assist on his debut, Mikel Obi believes the ideal signing for the club should have been Victor Osimhen.
"Obviously, he [Delap] wasn't the guy the fans wanted. We know who the fans wanted—they wanted Victor Osimhen to come to the club. But the club decided to go for Delap, the 38-year-old said in post-match analysis.
However, he expressed his well wishes for the former Ipswich Town striker.
"He is going to improve; he is going to get better. Hopefully, he hits the ground running and quietens his doubters. I wish him well at this club."
