An online news site published a news report on its website saying the “National Grid has collapsed for the 18th time in 2022.”

The report has now gone viral with about 1,500 retweets, likes and comments.

In verifying the claim, Daily Trust chronicled the number of times the national grid collapsed in 2022 and found out that it was five times this year, and not 18 times.

The latest collapse was on Wednesday as the national grid crashed to zero megawatts which threw the entire country into blackout.

The latest system collapse being the fifth this year, occured around 12 noon when the grid went blank.

As of 11am Wednesday, data from the System Operations section of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), indicated that the grid generation had dropped from over 3000MW earlier to 2,788.90MW with 19 active Generation Companies (GenCos).

Before now the country experienced similarly collapse a month ago which was on June 12.

Similarly, on May 10, 2022 the national grid collapsed, throwing the nation into darkness.

Before now, the grid had collapsed on April 9 and March 14 respectfully.

Daily Trust found out that the grid had collapsed only five times in 2022 and not 18 times; as such, the claim is false.
