FIDA Ogun call prosecution of LG official who assaulted woman in viral video

The International Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA), Ogun Chapter, has condemned the alleged assault on a yet to be identified woman by officials of Ifo Local Government seen in a viral online video.

The assault, described as “unwarranted”, was condemned in a statement by FIDA Public Relations Officer, Mrs Ganiyat Olusesi, on Monday.

The Chairperson of FIDA, Mrs Kemi Osisanya, in the statement condemning the public assault, called for the persecution of the government officials under the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act.

Osisanya said that whilst FIDA did not support the flouting of laid down rules by anyone, it condemned in its totality the assault on the woman, especially as it was obvious that she posed no threat to anyone.

“It has come to the notice of FIDA through a viral online video wherein an assault was carried out in the presence of several people.

“In the video, the agonizing voice of the woman being assaulted was heard where she claimed to have been arrested by some officials of Ifo Local Government in Ogun enforcing the lockdown order of the state government.

“FIDA views the act of the officer in the video as violence against women and urges that it be so treated.

“FIDA is also ready to offer free legal aid to the victim,” she said.

The FIDA Chairperson also lauded the Local Government Transition Committee Chairman, Mr Fola Salami, for acting swiftly by sanctioning all the officers on duty as at the time of the assault.

She further urged that the perpetrator be prosecuted under the Ogun State Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law.

This, she said, would serve as a deterrent to others who might want to tow the same line and also further prove that the Ogun State government is not paying lip service to the issue of gender violence. (NAN)
