FG debunks claim of maths olympiad sponsorship

The Federal Ministry of Education has clarified reports circulating online that a 15-year-old Nigerian student who allegedly qualified to represent the country at the International Mathematics Olympiad in China was denied sponsorship. The Ministry stated that no official request for sponsorship or support was received from any recognised institution, association, or individual in connection with the said competition.

Following a thorough review of its records and correspondence, the Ministry confirmed that there is no documented application or formal communication seeking assistance for participation in the Olympiad. It emphasised that all matters relating to student representation in academic competitions must follow due process, with requests submitted through recognised educational bodies or official channels to allow for proper verification and approval.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting outstanding Nigerian students through fair, transparent, and merit-based processes. It urged the public to disregard unverified social media reports and rely only on information from its official communication channels. The Ministry remains dedicated to accountability, integrity, and the promotion of academic excellence across all levels of education in Nigeria.
