FG blames flood victims for ignoring warnings to evacuate

Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu

Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu has said that it would take over 30 years to curtail the flooding situation across the country.

He made this known after a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday October 26.

Speaking in a presentation he made to the Council jointly with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Adamu noted that a lot of capital intensive initiatives still need to be put in place in the future to avert the consequences of flood disasters.

According to Adamu, flood cannot be prevented but can only be reduced by the government, adding that the investments that would prevent flood are not something that can be achieved under one administration.

He disclosed that the Buhari-led administration is working on a flood management masterplan which will take at least three years to complete.

Adamu blames the flood victims for ignoring the warnings to evacuate. He also said that tree felling and degraded soil are to be blamed for the massive impact of this year's floods across the country.
