Why it is wrong to pair Osimhen, Boniface in Super Eagles attack - Ex international shares insight

Contrary to the expectations of fans, former Nigerian defender Efe Ambrose believes pairing Victor Osimhen with Victor Boniface in the Super Eagles attack may not be good for the team.

The duo was expected to lead the team's attack at the last African Cup of Nations, but the latter pulled out of the squad after sustaining an injury few days before the tournament.

Boniface has been a key figure in the Bayer Leverkusen team that won their maiden Bundesliga title on Sunday, April 14 with five matches to spare.

The 23-year-old is Leverkusen's leading scorer having notched 18 goals across all competitions for the undefeated Xabi Alonso side.

Osimhen on the other hand had a remarkable campaign with Napoli last season after he guided the Naples-based club to their first Scudetto title in 33 years.

The 25-year-old netted 26 Serie A goals to clinch the Capocannoniere award.

Football-loving fans of Nigeria are looking forward to the day the duo will start upfront for the three-time African champions.

Efe Ambrose, however, believes it may not be best for the team if the Victors should start together for Nigeria.

”Two good players playing in two different teams with different formations is different from playing in the same team with a different formation. They are both pointman at their clubs, so having both play for Nigeria will mean one playing out of position or one dropping to the bench”, he told OwnGoalNigeria.com.

”Boniface play in a formation where he is at the peak of the attack to receive the passes just like Osimhen at Napoli. Playing both in a 4-4-2 formation looks good on paper, but they could be a problem of players running into each other’s space in the box”, he concluded.
