Errant politicians should be banned from politics - Igini

Mike Igini Mike Igini

Akwa Ibom State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini, has said politicians involved in electoral fraud should be banned from participating in politics.

Igini who said this on Friday in a phone interview with Saturday PUNCH added that such measures had been taken in the United Kingdom.

He said, “The United Kingdom is a good example of a country where such measures were taken years ago to deal with conduct associated with electoral fraud that involved politicians many of whom were either banned for one electoral cycle or outright ban for life from politics.

“We need such measures here. It is my humble opinion and a strong belief that key political actors involved in electoral fraud and found guilty should be banned for a very long time from any form of participation in politics. The biggest challenge of political systems in many places is the impunity of key political actors.”

Igini added that INEC employees were expected to adhere to a strict provision of the law and ethical values in the discharge of their duties.
