Enugu Airport: We demolished illegal structures for safety reasons- Commissioner

Akanu Ibiam International Airport Akanu Ibiam International Airport

Commissioner of Information for Enugu State, Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh has given reasons why the Enugu State Government destroyed buildings and structures encroaching on the airport premises.

According to the commissioner, illegal structures like the radio mast of the state broadcasting service, and Free Trade Zone, were competing with the day-to-day running of airport activities, thereby forcing the Government to demolish those structures.

The exercise was carried out by the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, alongside officials of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria to make sure the airport was ready by the April 2020 deadline.

Recall that the Federal Government first closed the Akanu Ibiam International Airport on August 24, 2019 over several circumstances. Part of the reasons involves: illegal structures encroaching on the airport premises which hampered communication between the planes and control tower.
