EndSARS: Many of our facilities were vandalised, says INEC

Days after the end of EndSARS protests, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is still counting massive losses.

In fact, Festus Okoye, INEC's national commissioner and chairman of information and voter education committee, on Thursday, November 5, disclosed that many of the body's facilities were damaged by miscreants during the rally, Channels TV reports.

Okoye revealed that the hoodlums stretched their destruction to parts of the country where bye-elections have been scheduled to be held.

He explained that this why the commission saw the need to major stakeholders in the electoral process before deciding on an actual date for the conduct of the elections.

His words: “Consequently, the Commission will consult with political parties and civil society organisations on Tuesday 10th November 2020 and then with the media and Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) on Wednesday 11th November 2020."

Meanwhile, INEC announced that the next presidential election would be held on February 18, 2023.

Speaking on Thursday, October 15, the electoral commission's chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, made this known while addressing pressmen during a media briefing in Abuja.

INEC boss also inaugurated a special Adhoc committee on the review of the 1999 constitution.

According to him, the country has 855 days to the next general election, charging members of the House of Representatives to make a swift move on the amendment.
