End SARS: Govt must be held responsible for the death of protesters

While the whole world is closely monitoring the outcome of the ongoing #EndSARS protest that has rocked several states in Nigeria, influential Nigerians, home and in the diaspora have waded into the trendy conversation that has once again put Nigeria in the global spotlight.

Their reactions follow the announcement by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu that the now-defunct, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) have been rebranded to become the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team.

After 10 days of protests that were led by popular personalities and celebrities in the country, protesters demanded the end of extrajudicial killings, battery, extortion and brutality. They subsequently presented a 5-point demand to the government.

President of the Greater Accra Yoruba Community Ghana, Amb. Oloye O. Fatuyi FIIM believes the police chiefs in the country have done citizens a disservice. He accused them of being ignorant of the main issues affecting the country.

In an interview with MyNigeria.com, Mr. Fatuyi criticized the handling of the crisis by the Buhari led administration, noting the Chief of Army staff, Chief of Airforce staff, Chief of Naval staff have all failed in their duties.

He also called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) and other international bodies to hold the DSS, the police, the army, and every other security agency responsible for any breach of the human rights of Nigerians as stated in Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution.

"I will call on the ICC in Nigeria, the DSS, the police, the army, and every other sector of our security. They should look at the leaders, wherever they kill Nigerians, they should be held responsible because what they are doing now is not outside their constitutional right."
