The Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje has described former Emir of Kano State, Muhammad Sanusi II as disrespectful.

This was contained in a press statement approving the sacking of the ex-traditional ruler today. The statement was signed by the Secretary to the Kano State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji.

The statement said that Sanusi disrespected the office of the State Governor and other lawful authorities. He was accused of refusing to attend official meetings organised by the Government. All of which was termed insubordination according to the letter.

"It is on record and in so many instances Malam Muhammad Sanusi II has been found breaching part 3 section 13 (a-e) of the Kano State Emirate Law 2019 and which if left unchecked will destroy the good and established image of the Kano Emirate," the statement read in part.

Going further, the statement said that Sanusi's removal was made after due consultation with the relevant stakeholders in the state. It also added that his removal was to safeguard culture, tradition religion, and prestige of the Kano Emirate.

"This removal is made after due consultation with the relevant stakeholders and in compliance with part 3 section 13 of the Kano State Emirate Law 2019 and other reasons stated above.

"The removal was reached in order to safeguard the sanctity, culture, tradition, religion, and prestige of the Kano Emirate built over a thousand years," the statement read.

Ganduje called for calm, as he promised to appoint a new Emir soon.

"His Excellency Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje OFR calls on the general public to remain calm, law-abiding and to go about their normal businesses while a new Emir would be appointed," the statement concluded.

Prior to his accession, Sanusi was an economist and banker. He served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria from 2009 to 2014, when he was suspended by President Goodluck Jonathan after raising the alarm on the $20bn alleged to be missing.

The PUNCH reports that the emir has been engaged in a battle with the governor since last year amid allegations that he supported the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Abba Kabir-Yusuf.

The monarch has since been under investigation for alleged corruption while his emirate was split into five to whittle down his influence.
