Election 2023: Governor Ganduje names region to produce Buhari's successor

Governor Ganduje said the 2023 presidency should be zoned to southern Nigeria Governor Ganduje said the 2023 presidency should be zoned to southern Nigeria

Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Kano state governor, said zoning should be respected because it is a strategy to winning the 2023 presidential election.

Governor Ganduje made this disclosure on Friday, February 12, when he appeared as a guest on Channels TV's Politics Today programme monitored by Legit.ng.

According to the governor, the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), should allow power to move to the southern part of the country for the sake of fairness.

This publication notes that the question of zoning of the 2023 presidency ticket has become a bone of contention in the ruling party.

Party chieftains led by transport minister Rotimi Amaechi and work and housing minister Babatunde Raji Fashola have been telling the APC leaders to respect the zoning arrangement.

On the other hands, some politicians and APC chieftains from the north have countered Fashola and Amaechi's position, arguing that there is no written arrangement for zoning.

The north, which produced incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari, has been holding on to power since 2015.

When asked where Buhari successor should come from Governor Ganduje said it should be from southern Nigeria for the sake of fairness.

"I think the zoning should be respected. It is a strategy to winning election. It should be from the southern part of the country, but that will be a consensus."
