Edo Elections: PDP to elect LG delegates on June 16 ahead of primaries

Ahead of the Edo elections, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has said that it will elect local government delegates for the party's primary elections on June 16.

Dr Tony Aziegbemi, the Chairman, PDP in Edo, disclosed this in an interview in Benin on Thursday.

Aziegbemi said that once that election was done, the party would be ready for the primaries billed for June 19.

Aziegbemi said that the party had recently held a very peaceful and well-organised congress in the state to elect the three ad hoc delegates for the primaries.

According to him, the party expects well over 2,000 delegates for the governorship primaries, which will be conducted according to the party’s constitution and without rancour.

On why the party adopted indirect primaries to elect a candidate for the Sept. 19 governorship election, Aziegbemi said indirect primaries were more organised and credible.

He explained that the party’s constitution was very clear on how a governorship candidate in a state must emerge.

Besides, he said that the party stood by the resolution reached and passed by the leadership of the party that there should be no zoning of the governorship ticket.

“By this, it means aspirants from any three of the zones can contest for the governorship ticket.

“I can tell you that we have three capable and talented members of the party from these zones who have picked their forms at N21 million each and have been screened.

“Any of them who eventually picks the ticket on June 19, can beat anyone the other parties pick as their candidate come September,” he said.
