Chibuke Azubike has dismissed claims that he's the Obi of Lagos, clarifying to MyNigeria that his title is Obi Ndigbo of Lagos State.

MyNigeria reported that an outrage had been sparked following a flyer announcing that some Igbo people residing in Lagos plan to build a palace for Azubike as the Obi of Lagos. This title is not recognised in the land.

The flyer states that a celebration will be held to mark the first Obi of Lagos's Ofala and New Yam festivals. The event will take place at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, on Saturday, September 13, 2025.

According to the flyer, the highlight of the event includes the donation of N1.5 billion to build a palace for the Obi of Lagos. Other projects include an office complex, an event centre, a guest house for Igbos in distress, and a shopping plaza.

The flyer sparked outrage from many who claim that such a title is not recognised and was intended to provoke the Yoruba indigenes of Lagos State.

One monarch, the Ilukosi-Ijesa, Oba Omotooyosi Bayo M.Akinleye, said he has directed his "team to file a petition against one Chibuke Azubike parading himself as Obi of Lagos, and will bring this up at our Traditional Rulers Council meeting coming up this Friday."

He added, "This act of provocation against our people will not go unanswered."

Reacting, Wale Ajetunmobi, a Media Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, revealed that the Obi of Lagos has an explanation to give.

Sanwo-Olu's aide shared on X, "Relevant authorities are already on the matter. The guy will have to explain in the coming days how he came about the title."

Also reacting, the Secretary General of Think Yoruba First, Dr. Bukola Adeniji, urged the Yoruba people to avoid distractions and stay focused.

He said, "This circulating flier attached is meant to provoke. The appropriate authorities in Lagos State @LagostourismO are aware, and they are looking into it. Please, do not be triggered by anyone to stage any violence, as that is what the planners intend. Any means of engagement should be peaceful."

When MyNigeria contacted Azubike, he told our correspondent that his title was misrepresented in the flyer, denying ownership of the Obi of Lagos title.

He said, "It's a lie. That is a fallacy by the publicity team—nothing like that. I'm only doing Ofala and New Yam festival."

He described himself as the "Obi Ndigbo of Lagos State, not Obi of Lagos State. That's my title. Don't mind all this social media rubbish."

When asked if the Lagos State government is aware of his title, he said, "Are you interrogating me or do you want to verify from me as press?"

After being made aware of what Sanwo-Olu's media aide said concerning relevant authorities getting on the matter, he said, "No problem, when we get to that bridge, we will cross it."
