EPL giants step up interest in Lookman

Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United have stepped up their interest in Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman as the Nigerian international emerges as one of the most sought-after players in the summer transfer market following his remarkable Serie A campaign.

The 27-year-old has become a prime target for several Premier League heavyweights after contributing 25 goals across all competitions this season, with his outstanding performances propelling Atalanta into European contention and significantly increasing his market value.

Arsenal have reportedly made Lookman their primary transfer target ahead of Athletic Club’s Nico Williams as they look to strengthen their attacking options. Manager Mikel Arteta is building a squad capable of competing on all fronts, and Lookman presents an exciting profile given their current focus on squad depth. His pace, direct play, and composure in front of goal could provide cover behind Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, reducing the burden on their young stars during congested fixture periods.

Chelsea are meanwhile prioritising wide attacking options, with Lookman representing a natural choice given Mykhailo Mudryk’s inconsistency and the lack of cutting edge from their current alternatives. Given his proven pedigree in Italy and his Premier League experience with Everton, Fulham and Leicester City, he fits the profile of a ready-made solution.

Liverpool may view Lookman as a crucial component in their evolving attack. With Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota underperforming, a more consistent wide threat like Lookman could provide the necessary edge in tight matches, both domestically and in Europe.

Manchester United also require additional attacking reinforcement as Lookman could offer an experienced, in-form option capable of immediately impacting games and complementing their current setup.

The forward’s journey to continental recognition has been remarkable. Having struggled during his earlier Premier League spells, managing just 11 goals in 96 appearances across Everton, Fulham and Leicester City, his record at Atalanta has been far more impressive. He scored 20 goals and supplied seven assists across 40 appearances in all competitions last season, including a stunning hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Europa League final that helped Atalanta clinch their first-ever European trophy.

Atalanta have placed a €50m price tag on their star performer amid rising interest from multiple clubs. According to Tutto Mercato, the Bergamo outfit are open to selling and will only entertain offers in the region of €40-50 million.

The 2024 CAF African Footballer of the Year recently paid courtesy visits to President Bola Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, proudly presenting his award to the nation’s leadership. Governor Sanwo-Olu hailed him as a symbol of the “Greater Lagos Rising” spirit and a shining example for millions of Nigerian youths.
