EFCC blaming Nigerians for naira decline instead of politicians foreign luxury goods - Netizens

Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)

The Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has faulted Nigerians for the decline in the value of the naira.

The anti-graft agency stated that Nigerians buying goods in dollars are to be blamed for the exchange rate decline.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2024, EFCC noted that the value of the naira drops anytime Nigerians engage in dollar transactions.

“This message is for you in particular. Any time you buy goods in dollars, you devalue the naira,” EFCC tweeted.

“On a regular, patronise the naira and make it popular. Let’s make our currency spectacular,” the anti-graft agency added.

According to Peoples Gazette, the EFCC had conducted a nationwide raid on Bureau De Change operators to save the declining Nigerian naira.

However, Nigerians on X called out the anti-graft agency over their campaign. They claim the move targets ordinary Nigerians instead of the politicians with luxurious spending.

@Treovie: Let’s start with politicians having all their money in naira before the ordinary citizens will do so

@Oluwakaystone28; This message should be directed to the politicians sharing dollars on election day; many Nigerians can’t afford three-square meals. Shey na dem go buy goods with dollars or those rich people. I hear say Dangote wey dey sell fuel collects dollars?

The EFCC’s campaign comes following the economic hardship ravaging the country, while politicians embark on several trips abroad which are accompanied with luxury goods.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu received massive backlashes from citizens after being seen with his two sons as part of delegates on an official trip to Qatar.

A Nigerian senator made the news last year, 2023, when he spent N160 million on the purchase of a 2023 model of the Toyota Landcruiser.

Also, between January 15 and 25, 2024, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu was spotted at a lavish birthday event in Grenada.

Abuja socialite, Aisha Achimugu, was reported to have thrown the party, with the governor reportedly spending obscene amounts on private jets, hotels and women.

Sanwo-Olu, who had previously been captured flaunting a luxury Patek Philippe wristwatch worth £136,189, did not outright deny attending a party on the Caribbean Island.

However, his office released a statement saying the Governor held a meeting with the prime minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell.
