Don't seek re-election, you have failed Nigerians - Oritsejafor tells Tinubu

Former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has urged President Bola Tinubu to refrain from seeking a second term in 2027, criticising his administration for failing to meet Nigerians' expectations and exacerbating the country’s problems.

During a discussion on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Oritsejafor expressed that the government has lacked the leadership necessary to tackle the nation’s issues and should pass the baton to more capable hands.

He observed that Nigeria is seemingly regressing, with citizens enduring greater hardships and little hope for change. He stated that the current administration has caused more harm than good and should be denied another chance to continue along this ineffective path.

While he stopped short of calling for Tinubu’s resignation outright, the cleric advised the president to honestly evaluate his tenure and choose not to seek another term if he cannot deliver substantial progress.

Oritsejafor also echoed Peter Obi’s recent suggestion that Tinubu might consider stepping aside to allow more competent leadership.

Regarding the APC’s electoral victories, he questioned their credibility, claiming many of the results were essentially predetermined, not genuine democratic contests. He argued that Nigeria’s electoral system no longer truly reflects the voters’ will, with many believing their votes no longer matter.

He added that if given the chance to speak directly to Tinubu, he would tell him that his government has fallen short and should either step down, avoid re-election, or designate capable leaders to overhaul the system.

Finally, he affirmed that the church will continue speaking out on national issues and holding leaders accountable for the good of Nigeria.
