Some construction workers who are currently on the site of the newly inaugurated Dangote Petroleum Refinery have alleged have alleged that work is still ongoing on the site despite the widely circulated reportage that work is complete in the 19 billion dollar project.

The refinery which is the biggest in Africa will produce 650,000 barrels a day as analysts believe the refinery has the potential of addressing the country’s energy supply crisis.

Speaking in a video that was cited on social media, the three workers speaking in pidgin said: "That place wey them say work don finish. Na lie. Work never finish o. Nigeria na scam. See am". Their revelation has generated mixed reactions on social media.

Owned by Nigerian industrialist and Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, the refinery is expected to boost domestic refining capacity, getting rid of the current consumption shortfall. It will also reduce import dependency and stimulate economic growth.

The refinery is the first privately owned crude oil refinery in Nigeria. Nigeria’s existing refineries, plagued by operational inefficiencies under government control, have failed to meet the growing demand for petroleum products. Substantial imports have become necessary.

Nigeria currently imports more than 80% of its refined petroleum products. The country is the largest importer of refined petroleum products in Africa. Local production will therefore massively cut the country’s import bill.
