Cyclist crushed to death in Anambra

A commercial motorcyclist has been crushed to death by an articulated truck near a Catholic Church in Akwaeze, Anocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The crash, which occurred at 12:35 pm on Saturday, involved the Mercedes Benz 911 truck and the motorcycle.

The deceased was reportedly overtaking the truck when he suddenly lost control and was crushed by the truck.

Confirming the incident, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FESC), Andrew Kumapayi said the crash was caused by speeding and wrongful overtaking.

He warned motorcyclists to avoid unnecessary speeding and overtaking that usually led to the crash, just as he insisted they should always be on their safety helmet to protect themselves from a head injury.

He said: “A fatal traffic crash happened today 10th April 2021 by St Joseph Catholic Church akwaeze in Anocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, at about 1235 hrs.

“The crash happened between an unidentified driver of Mercedes Benz 911 Truck with registration number KPP 273 XD and an unidentified rider of a Kymco motorcycle with registration number AKL172QN.

“Eyewitness report indicates that the crash was caused by speeding and wrongful overtaking. The motorcycle rider while speeding and overtaking the truck was crushed by the truck driver.

“Two male adults were involved in the crash, the male adult motorcycle rider was taken to St Joseph hospital by FRSC rescue team from Igboukwu Command and was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. His body has been deposited at the morgue.”
