The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is on the verge of deploying non-intrusive inspection technology (cargo scanners) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, with the project awaiting final regulatory approval for full takeoff.

The Acting Comptroller Non-Intrusive Inspection, Deputy Comptroller of Customs (DC) Umar Madugu, made the announcement on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, following a comprehensive readiness assessment of the newly installed facilities at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

During his visit, Madugu inspected the newly installed CX180-180DH pallet cargo scanners positioned at the SAHCO and NAHCO warehouses within the Abuja airport. To ensure the technology is utilized to its full potential, DC Madugu stated that officers underwent specialized image analysis training last month. According to him, the training has equipped officers with the skills necessary to accurately interpret scanner images, which will drastically reduce inspection times and bolster border security.

He recommended Security and Traffic Protocols
to guarantee seamless operations once the scanners go live, Madugu proposed immediate infrastructural and security upgrades for the scanning zones, emphasising the need for structured coordination.

"Traffic assessment officers will be positioned strategically and CCTV cameras in place to coordinate the movement of inbound and outbound cargo within the scanning area, to ensure seamless operations, and improve efficiency." DC Madugu stated

The assessment was conducted in collaboration with representatives from the Trade Modernization Project Limited and the Quality Assurance Unit, who co-evaluated the facility's operational readiness.

Prior to the inspection, DC Madugu paid a courtesy visit to Comptroller Victoria Aliboh, the Customs Area Controller of the FCT Area Command, to secure formal clearance for the assessment exercise. The successful evaluation according to stakeholders, marks a major milestone in the Nigeria Customs Service's ongoing commitment to leveraging technological advancement for faster, more secure cargo clearance.
