Crisis rocks Kano APC as party chairman, minister clash

Tensions have emerged within the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kano State as party Chairman Abdullahi Abbas reportedly clashed with Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Attah, over the minister’s public comments on party matters.

The crisis is said to have started after Attah allegedly endorsed Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau as the APC’s preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Kano.

In a letter to the minister, Abbas described the comments as “unguarded” and warned that they could create misunderstandings and disunity within the party. He said internal party affairs fall strictly under the purview of the APC leadership and its designated spokespersons, adding that failure to comply could result in disciplinary action.

Responding, Attah, through his publicity aide, Seyi Olorunsola, defended his remarks as expressions of his democratic rights. The minister said his statements were personal assessments aimed at providing strategic political insight, not official party declarations.

Attah reiterated his loyalty to the APC and President Bola Tinubu, stressing that his endorsement of Senator Barau was intended as a patriotic opinion on the party’s prospects in the 2027 elections, and not an attempt to override party structures.

He also cautioned against dragging internal party disagreements into the public sphere at a time when the country is facing pressing security challenges.

The minister said his comments were based on long-standing engagement with the grassroots and were meant to encourage discussion and debate within the party ahead of formal nomination processes.
