Former Senator, Shehu Sani has asked President Bola Tinubu, Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and other heads of states belonging to ECOWAS to show love ousted Niger President by offering him a position in their country.

According to him, instead of declaring war on the Niger junta led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, they should appoint Bozoum as a co-president just like what President Sekou Toure of Guinea when the military in Ghana overthrew President Kwame Nkrumah.

On 26 July 2023, a coup d’etat occurred in Niger Republic where the country's presidential guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum and presidential guard commander General Abdourahamane Tchiani proclaimed himself as the leader of a new military junta.

This has brought about mixed reactions from the neighbouring West African Countries. Mali and Burkina Faso have declared support for Niger junta while the remaining nations on the ECOWAS stand against the coup in Niger.

Nigeria President, Bola Tinubu who is the Chairman of the ECOWAS has imposed sanctions on Niger including cutting the power supply to the country.

Niger junta however, has vowed to resist any external pressure to reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum after ECOWAS imposed sanctions and Western allies suspended aid.

Reacting to the development, Shehu Sani took to his Twitter page to share his thoughts.

He wrote;

“When the Military in Ghana overthrew President Kwame Nkrumah, President Sekou Toure of Guinea offered him the position of Co-President of Guinea. Presidents Tinubu of Nigeria, Nana Akufo of Ghana and other Ecowasians can show similar love to Bozoum instead of threats of war.”
