Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, has blamed corrupt politicians for the negative perception of politics.
He stated that leadership failure is responsible for conflicts in Africa during an event organized by the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) and partners in Abuja to commemorate the International Day of Peace.
Jonathan noted that Africa’s conflicts are primarily driven by power struggles, expressing concern about the political situation in Nigeria and emphasising the need for a culture of peace to prevent ongoing conflicts.
He called for a shift in mindset among politicians and stressed the importance of peaceful elections, highlighting that technology alone cannot solve electoral issues if corrupt individuals manipulate it.
Dr. Samuel Iroye, Head of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at the National Open University of Nigeria, emphasized Jonathan’s call for collective efforts in promoting peace.
He also highlighted the importance of youth engagement in development initiatives and equal access to education to achieve peace.
The Director General of IPCR, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, stated that there is a need for investment in peace and urged Nigerians to prioritize its development.
Jonathan was honored as a Fellow by IPCR for his dedication to peace over personal interests.
