Coronavirus: Kano suspends Durbar during Sallah

Kano Government on Monday suspended all Eid-el-Kabir (Sallah) festivities.

The traditional Durbar, known in the local parlance as Hawan Sallah, which is marked by colourful horse riding, will also not hold.

The decision to suspend Sallah festivities was taken in compliance with the Federal Government’s directive which placed six states, including Kano, on red alert.

It was gathered the development is part of measures adopted by Nigeria and other African countries affected by the third wave of COVID-19 -the Delta variant, detected to be more transmissible.

Kano Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, in a statement, however, said Eid Prayers would hold in the five emirates and mosques across the state.

“The red alert allows authorities in the affected states to restrict celebrations and gatherings to a minimum, particularly the traditional Durbar (Hawan Sallah) which is marked by colourful horse riding events watched by large gatherings.

“Therefore, I urged the people of Kano to observe safety protocols that involve use of face mask, hand washing and distancing during Eid prayers,” Garba said.
