Commissioner says 'disability not excuse for lawlessness' as Lagos arrests disable man

The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has stated that disability is no excuse for engaging in lawlessness.

This was after operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) today commenced a clearance operation at Ketu-Alapere, removing beggars and other individuals constituting nuisance along the road median.

The exercise is part of ongoing efforts to maintain order, ensure free flow of traffic, and keep our public spaces clean and safe for all.

According to Wahab, "Every part of Lagos must reflect the standard of a #CleanerLagos and a #GreaterLagos. All the individuals arrested will be profiled and handed over to the appropriate authorities for necessary actions."

However, the action of the operatives was faulted by a social media user who lamented that the officials shared a video showing them arresting a disabled man.

@cfc_phoenix said, "Honourable Commissioner, this kind of post is inappropriate for an official account. Regardless of the intention, people with disabilities deserve to be treated with dignity at all times. The first 30 seconds of the post are especially dehumanising."

Reacting, the commissioner said, "Disability is not an excuse for lawlessness. Lagos will not condone any form of indiscipline, irrespective of who is involved."
