Chukwueze on course for Milan stay

Nigerian forward Samuel Chukwueze could be on course to fight for a place in the AC Milan team under new coach Ruben Amorim, as the former Manchester United boss assumed duties.

Despite speculation linking him with a permanent move away from the club, Chukwueze has expressed a desire to remain at Milan and fight for his place under Amorim.

Chukwueze was the subject of transfer talks between Milan and Trabzonspor, but the Nigeria international was not interested in the move, while the Rossoneri also rejected a €15m bid from the Turkish club.

The winger has returned to Milan after a loan spell at Fulham, with the Premier League side opting against activating the €26m purchase option included in the agreement.

During his time at Fulham, Chukwueze scored three goals and provided four assists in 23 league appearances, forming a strong partnership with fellow Nigerians Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey.

According to the latest reports from Milan, Amorim will determine the club’s transfer strategy for the remainder of the summer after they committed more than €100m to the signings of two players at the start of the transfer window.

According to Football Italia, the Rossoneri are not done with their recruitment and are already planning moves for a defender and a replacement for Rafael Leao, while Chukwueze was not mentioned among the potential departures.

“Milan want at least three more signings after committing over €100m on Gila and Ramos. Milan have a full agreement in place to sign centre-back Mario Gila from Lazio in a package worth €30m, including bonuses.

“It is expected that Milan will part company with some of their current first-team stars this window, Rafael Leao among them, but according to Wednesday’s reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Rossoneri are already thinking about potential new attacking midfielders to bring in.”

Wednesday’s report claims that Genk’s Konstantinos Karetsas is the current favourite, although it will require another significant investment to bring the teenage Greece international to San Siro.

Milan are also reportedly interested in signing another left-back and potentially another centre-back this summer.

While Amorim’s plans for Chukwueze remain unclear, a strong pre-season could revive his Milan career, although a move elsewhere could also provide the fresh start he needs ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming international commitments.
