In 2014, a chieftain of the then-opposition All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, criticised the Goodluck Jonathan administration for what he described as the slaughtering of Christian worshippers in the country.
In a post on Twitter (Now X), Tinubu questioned Jonathan's competence to protect Nigerians.
"The slaughtering of Christian worshippers is strongly condemnable. It calls into question the competence of Jonathan to protect Nigerians," he said.
The former governor of Lagos made the post a year before his party unseated Jonathan to produce President Muhammadu Buhari.
Eight years after Buhari's administration, Tinubu succeeded him, inheriting the problems that Buhari had been unable to solve, which they both criticised Jonathan for. Part of the problem included the killing of Christians by Jihadists.
Unfortunately, with global attention now focused on the killing of Christians in Nigeria, made public by US TV show host Bill Maher, Tinubu's administration has been playing down the trend.
Instead of holding him to account in the same manner as he did with former President Jonathan, officials of the Tinubu administration have been defending him.
In a statement, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, admitted that terrorists operate in the country. He, however, stated that the violent activities of terrorist groups are not confined to any particular religious or ethnic community.
"These criminals target all who reject their murderous ideology, regardless of faith. Muslims, Christians, and even those who do not identify with any religion have suffered at their hands," he said.
However, if Tinubu stated that under 'incompetent' Jonathan, Christians were being slaughtered, shouldn't his own competence be called into question, especially as his minister has admitted that under his watch, not only Christians are getting attacked but also Muslims and atheists?
