Professor Abiodun Otegbayo, the Chief Medical Director of Nigeria’s foremost tertiary health institution, the University College Hospital (UCH) has said that atleast 600 workers have resigned from the hospital in the last year.

Otegbayo made this known in a news conference marking the 65th Founder’s Day celebration of UCH in Ibadan, on Monday, November 21.

According to him, at least 15 Nurses, Doctors and Pharmacists, among others exit UCH on a weekly basis.

He said: “Every week, I signed resignation letters of 15 health workers at the institution, who are mostly clinicians, that is, Nurses, Doctors and Pharmacists, among others," he said.

He noted that from 2020 to October 2022, more than 600 clinical staff have left the hospital while adding that the bureaucracy bottlenecks have hindered getting their replacement.

Otegbayo said there was an acute shortage of manpower due to push and pull factors, such as poor welfare of workers and insecurity, among others.
